Finnpulp selected Port of HaminaKotka as its export port

Port of HaminaKotka Ltd has concluded a significant letter of intent with Finnpulp, which is building a bioproducts mill in Kuopio, Finland, concerning the routing of the pulp products produced by the mill.

Port of HaminaKotka Ltd will reserve and prepare a land area and its connections for Finnpulp for the building of a pulp warehouse and for logistics operations. Correspondingly, Finnpulp will concentrate, through a long-term agreement, its massive annual transport of 1.2 million pulp tonnes to the Port of HaminaKotka. The warehouse will be used for operating Finnpulp’s all transport destined for the global export market. Cargo handling will take place using both conventional methods and container transport.

In March this year, an agreement was reached between Port of HaminaKotka Ltd, Steveco and UPM on the construction of a large-scale pulp centre in the same D-area in Mussalo where Finnpulp’s operations will be located. Port of HaminaKotka Ltd is currently investing more than 30 million euros in the area to construct the field area, quay and breakwater.

In accordance with the letter of intent, the Port of HaminaKotka will be, in its own logistics role, involved in the biggest investment ever in the wood-processing industry in Finland. This will consolidate the position of the Port of HaminaKotka as the largest general, export and container port in Finland.

“Finnpulp’s decision to choose us as its export port means a huge opportunity for the Port of HaminaKotka. This will raise our exports of the products of the Finnish wood-processing industry to a whole new dimension and give the Port of HaminaKotka the status of the leading pulp port on the Baltic Sea. The decision concerning the construction of the D-area in Mussalo has turned out to be profitable even before it is actually complete,” says Kimmo Naski, CEO of Port of HaminaKotka Ltd.
