Investments at the Port of HaminaKotka for the large-scale Kazakhstan project will grow to almost 50 million euros

In September 2016, Port of HaminaKotka Ltd and the Belgian company Sarens Group N.V., the global leader in crane rental services, heavy lifting, and engineered transport, signed an agreement concerning sea transport through the Port of HaminaKotka.

The project involves the transport of extremely large and heavy modules (dimensions 70 m x 16 m x 11 m, weight 1500 to 1800 t) via the Port of HaminaKotka to the Russian inland waterway system and further to Kazakhstan. The project will significantly increase the operations at the Hamina Harbour until 2021.

Now Port of HaminaKotka Ltd and Sarens have agreed on a major expansion of the project. Sarens’ investments in the project in Hamina will increase from the original approx. 20 million euros to over 46 million euros. Moreover, Port of HaminaKotka Ltd has invested approx. 3 million euros to improve the infrastructure at the Hamina Harbour. One part of the expansion is that Port of HaminaKotka Ltd will purchase a large port warehouse in the immediate vicinity of the quay and demolish it to make room for the storage of the modules.

The transport will take place by ocean-going vessels arriving in Hamina and, following the massive port handling and storage of their cargo, river barges using the inland waterway system of Russia. Sarens will bring to Hamina about 150 logistics experts of its own for the duration of the project. In addition to these, the project will employ approximately 50 local people from the various sectors of logistics.

The excellent logistics location of the Kotka-Hamina region, versatile range of services available at the large port and the comprehensive opportunities of the port for the successful implementation of the international project were the key factors why Sarens selected the Port of HaminaKotka as its partner.
