D0 quay in Mussalo D-area taken into use

The D0 quay section in the D-area at the Mussalo Harbour of the Port of HaminaKotka was taken into operative use on 27 December 2022. The D0 quay is one intermediate target in the quay project of the Port of HaminaKotka for the D-area, scheduled for 2021 to 2023. The end quay that was commissioned in harbour basin D now has a length of 153 metres, and it will initially serve the needs of the pulp terminals in the D-area of the Mussalo Harbour.

The building client for the D0 quay, like for the D1 quay with a length of 230 metres, commissioned in 2019, was Port of HaminaKotka Ltd, the main contractor was Terramare Oy and the electrical contractor was Sähköryhmä Muukka Oy.

The quay structure is made up of 18 metres tall corner retaining wall elements made of reinforced concrete and horizontally anchored by means of pull rods at the background. The elements, the heaviest of which weighs 300 tonnes, were concreted on site and installed by means of a floating raft crane during the summer of 2022.

The immediate background area of the D0 quay comprises an asphalted cargo handling area of approx. 10,000 square metres used by the port operator for work machinery and freight transfers. The quay contains two water supply points for vessels, and electricity outlets in the mooring posts and in the light mast switchboards at the background.

A new work machinery gate with access control system and a stationary fence to separate the terminal and quay area will be built in the D0 area in the summer of 2023.

The last stage in this project for the D-area at Mussalo, in other words the quays D2 and D3 at the southern end of the area, will be completed in 2023, giving the quays in the D-area a total length of 700 metres. The D-area has already become an internationally significant logistics hub for pulp transport. When the entire area is complete, it will provide a first-rate operating area for the cargo flows of international wood-processing industry.
