HAMINAKOTKA OPS

HAMINAKOTKA OPS – Deployment of onshore power supply in Port of HaminaKotka

The project will deploy onshore power supply (OPS) in the Mussalo harbour of the Port of HaminaKotka, located in Southeast Finland on the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor. 6 berths of the quays B and C will be equipped with connections for OPS according to the standards applicable for container vessels. The project covers the construction, installation, and commissioning of all required infrastructure, including a new OPS building with switchboards, transformers, and frequency converters and all required cabling, earthing, and OPS connection points with sockets on the quay deck. In addition, a new electricity grid connection of 20 kV will be procured for the needs of the OPS system.

The completed OPS system will provide electrical power of 4 MVA for each OPS connection point with a medium voltage of 6.6 kV on 2 different frequencies, 50 Hz and 60 Hz, depending on the frequency used by the electrical system of the vessel. The maximum total electrical power of the system will be 10 MVA. 6 vessels will be able to connect to the OPS simultaneously.

The project will enable container ships to use OPS instead of their auxiliary engines while berthing, thereby reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and particle matter, as well as noise pollution. The project contributes to the European Union’s long-term decarbonisation commitments and reducing the negative environmental impacts of transport.

The project implementation time is from November 1st, 2025, to August 31st, 2028.

The project has been awarded EUR 3 006 000 of EU co-funding from the Connecting Europe Facility.
