The FuelEU Maritime Regulation aims to reduce emissions from shipping by promoting the use of renewable, low-carbon fuels and clean energy technologies for ships. Beginning January 1, 2030, the regulation will require all container and passenger ships over 5,000 gross tonnage to use onshore power supply or other equivalent emission-free technology when calling at EU ports, unless a specifically defined exemption applies.
Port of HaminaKotka Ltd prepared for the change by launching its own shore power project last year. The company applied for EU funding for investment in the Mussalo port section from the CEF Transport Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) program and was granted just over EUR 3 million to build an onshore power supply system for container ships. Once completed, six berths at Mussalo B and C berths will be equipped with onshore electricity connections in accordance with international IEC standards. The project covers the construction, installation and commissioning of all necessary infrastructure, as well as all required cabling and grounding.
Port of HaminaKotka Ltd and ABB have agreed on the delivery of a shore power system in the Mussalo port. The agreement includes, among others, the design, installation and commissioning of the system, and acting as the main contractor for the project. ABB has extensive international experience in implementing port electrification and shore power systems for container terminals and ports.
